Algon and the kids sharing a smile

Algon Sawyer was born and raised in Creswell, NC. He is a smiling, always positive, well respected citizen of society. A husband and father of three children, Algon, age 39, moved to the Outer Banks to seek a laid back beach life and he hasn’t looked back since. Algon has a B.S. of Psychology from Fayetteville State University. Algon also served eight years in the United States Marine Corps; traveling to 18 different countries. Being a Platoon Sergeant, he had many responsibilities; which included, but not limited to, the physical training of Junior Marines, their education, their marksmanship proficiency, and team building. In 2005 to 2006, one of Algon’s deployments was a combat tour in Iraq. His duties and responsibilities included, but not limited to, scheduling Marines’ daily routines, security, and tactical situations. He reserves a special feeling for the experience of being able to mentor and lead Marines through whatsoever the situation was.

Algon, a veteran of multiple amateur Muay Thai competitions, says “the people I get to train with, the sound of pads when struck correctly, the feeling of accomplishment, meeting new people, and having good leaders, make training Muay Thai fun and different than anything else.” Algon is a silver medalist at the 2016 World Kickboxing Association (WKA) which took place in New York. In addition, Algon currently holds a blue belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

Algon is a charismatic and loving person who enjoys laughing and making those around him do the same. Algon has a unique way to balance seriousness when training while making it fun. Creating a welcoming atmosphere comes quite easy to him. Sit in on a class and you’ll feel like you have known him your whole life. He carries himself like a Marine should, who prides himself on being respectful, noble, dependable, and honorable. While teaching, Algon is a “lead by example” teacher. He encourages students, preaches commitment, and displays respect; all the while, having no ego or being a bully. Algon has many hobbies which include surfing, skating, and cooking. He says “at the end of the day, it’s about the students; not me.”

Don just before IKF Finals

Don Williams was born in Elizabeth City, NC. A successful General Contractor, he is the owner of Mainstay Construction in Kitty Hawk, NC. Having a reputation for building quality homes people also compliment him on being a modest, easy to approach kind of guy. You can catch Don with an espresso shot before practice talking about football and/or one of his many travel stories (ask him about the meat in Iceland).

Beginning Martial Arts in his early twenties, Don enjoys the challenges of pushing himself to grow both mentally and physically. Don has competed in all disciplines of Martial Arts holding an amateur boxing record of 2-1, a MMA record of 1-0, and is currently competing in Full Rules Muay Thai with a record of 2-0. In July of 2016 he competed in the IKF World Classic in Orlando, Florida coming away as the champion.

When not building, teaching, or training Don enjoys surfing, traveling, and anything history related. Don believes "empathy is a coaches greatest quality". He feels "a responsibility to pass along knowledge that was graciously taught to me". He understands the empowerment Martial Arts gives people and the confidence that comes with it to achieve great things outside the ring. "Muay Thai is an art, a science, it is many things but the main thing for me is that it's FUN" Don Williams.
